Hairpiece

Performance, 2022

This performance marked the first time I used my body as both material and medium, a canvas upon which history and identity could converge. Conceived in isolation during my 2022 quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19, this performance explores the profound symbolism of hair—its power as a site of self-expression, resistance, and control. By embodying the iconic hairstyles of Angela Davis, Josephine Baker, Marilyn Monroe, and Princess Diana, I was not merely referencing these women; I was attempting to become the hair itself—to inhabit its weight, shape, and historical significance. In black and white, the video unfolds as a visual diptych: on the left, still photographs of these women; on the right, my body is in motion, reinterpreting their presence through movement and transformation. This interplay between the fixed and the fluid invites viewers to witness how hair carries history—how it shapes identity, defines power, and challenges perception.
